Who Is The Little Prince?

The Little Prince is the most translated book of fiction after the Bible, with over 600 languages and dialects - and for good reason. On the surface a children's story, it is in fact a profound meditation on loneliness, friendship, love, and the loss of innocence that comes with adulthood. Its central lessons - that what is essential is invisible to the eye, that we are responsible for those we tame, and that adults have forgotten how to truly see - resonate across cultures and generations. That universality, combined with its deceptively simple prose and iconic illustrations drawn by the author himself, is why it continues to move readers of every age and background nearly a century after it was written.

History

Who Is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry?

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was one of the most notable authors of the 20th century - at once a pioneering aviator and one of France's most beloved writers. He opened air routes to Argentina for the legendary Aéropostale in the 1930s, flying over deserts and oceans at a time when aviation was still a dangerous adventure. That lived experience of solitude, vastness, and human fragility deeply shaped his writing. He wrote The Little Prince in New York in 1942, while in exile during World War II - a book that would become the most translated work of fiction after the Bible. He disappeared on July 31, 1944, on a reconnaissance mission at the controls of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning over the Mediterranean, leaving behind a legend as enduring as his work.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and the Americas

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote The Little Prince in the United States. Installing this work in Miami highlights a real French-American story rooted in both history and imagination.

Before New York, he also flew across Latin America as an Aéropostale pilot, helping open routes to Argentina. His life and writing connect North America, South America, and Europe, making Miami an especially meaningful home for this monument.

Saint-Exupéry returned to military service during World War II and disappeared on July 31, 1944 while flying a reconnaissance mission at the commands of a Lightning P-38. His life joined literature, flight, and public service. The Miami sculpture honors that full legacy by placing him hand-in-hand with the child character who continues to inspire generations across cultures and languages.

Words from The Little Prince

"And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
"Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them."
"If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night. All the stars are a-bloom with flowers..."
"When someone blushes, doesn't that mean 'yes'?"
"Only the children know what they are looking for."
"All grown-ups were once children... but only few of them remember it."

- Antoine de Saint Exupéry, The Little Prince

The Sculptor

Jean-Marc de Pas

Jean-Marc de Pas is a French sculptor born in Rouen in 1962. Trained at Beaux-Arts de Paris and Ecole Boulle, he has produced public monuments for decades, with a practice centered on figurative storytelling and poetic presence in civic space.

His work on Saint-Exupery and The Little Prince bridges literature and public art. The Miami concept is intentionally human-scale and interactive: no pedestal, direct proximity, and a gesture of companionship that children can understand immediately.

Beyond commissioned pieces, he created a large sculpture garden in Normandy where visitors move through narrative installations in nature. That same approach informs this Miami project: an artwork designed not only to be seen, but to be lived with over time.
